By Brenda Warner

Pain that affects the shoulders and neck can get to an extent that it is debilitating. It can get serious to a level that an individual is not able to carry out their daily activities. One of the very common causes of the pain is stress. When an individual over-thinks or worries too much, it is bound to take a toll on their health. This manifests itself as pain at the neck and shoulders. When considering neck and shoulder pain Edmonton residents ought to know of the causes and options of treatment.

Staying in one position for a prolonged time, for example spending lots of time in front of the computer or spending a whole day in front of the desk in the office, it may cause such pains. When you hold one position for a long time, muscles in these areas will be stiffened and their fibers tightened. In addition, sleeping in an uncomfortable position may also lead to the pains. Injury is also to blame.

When these pains are experienced, it is first important to determine whether it is caused by poor positioning of the body. If the pain is only slight, one may have some rest and it disappears. Heat or ice may also be applied on the affected areas. For pain relief, one may also purchase OTC drugs. If the pain persists after all this, it will be wise to contact a doctor.

The pains can also be cured using breathing exercises. Stress in most parts of the body is reduced when one focuses on exhaling rather than inhalation. Through complete exhalation, carbon dioxide in the lungs is reduced, leaving more space for oxygen. In order to extend the exhalation, you are advised to speak quietly while counting to 10. This is done repeatedly until one runs out of air. With this exercise, air should not be forcefully pushed.

In order to relieve tension within muscles, the tension must be felt. One will be required to place their palm at the back part of the neck and then tighten neck muscles. One way to achieve this is through jutting the chin forward. One is required to hold for about two seconds before the head is returned to its normal position.

One will need to focus on the muscles that have just been tightened before lifting the back of the head off the shoulders. More attention will need to be given to the tight muscles so that they release. The process is repeated in the morning and also evening until you get relief.

There is use of simple techniques such as massage, heat therapy and stretching exercises. For individuals suffering from tense shoulder muscles, there might be pain when massage is done. If the tension loosened using gentle heat prior to massage, pain will be eased.

Ultimately, when one is working towards easing pain in these areas, the treatment is ongoing and will require them to strive to keep the muscles loose. The pains can be permanently cured through stretching, massage and exercises. Some conditions require the use of a combination of methods.
