Investing in a C-Arm is major. Choosing a make and model can be challenging as well. To make cost-conscious and budget-wise decisions, there are three factors to consider. First, determine who will use the device and what they will be using it for. Second, forecast the number of procedures that require you to use a C-Arm. Third, ensure that the return is greater than initial and ongoing costs of using the machines.

It is important to find the C-Arm that meets at least all specifications of a medical practice. Some practices make the mistake of buying subpar equipment as well as buying overpowered equipment. Knowing the surgical needs of a practice and how it can be served by the machine is paramount. For example, orthopedics would most likely fare better with a mini machine than a machine with too many costly features.

Doctors use the systems for pain management and trauma patients. Different medical practices have unique specifications, and the system you should accommodate those differences. The maximum geometric range of the x-ray machine is quite important. Other aspects that should be considered are memory capacity and compatible printers.

Stem Cells in Ophthalmology Update 2: ACT Gets Go-ahead to Treat Stargardt’s

Advanced Cell Technology’s request to begin treating patients with Stargardt’s disease was approved by the FDA. This will be the second trial using human embryonic stem cells. The first being granted to Geron to treat spinal disease.

A multi-center trial will involve twelve patients. If the results are positive, ACT anticipates filing for an IND to treat age-related macular degeneration, as well as filing to begin clinical trials in Europe in the very near future.

ACT is now permitted to initiate a Phase I/II multicenter clinical trial to treat patients with dry AMD, the most common form of macular degeneration in the world. There are currently no approved treatments available for this prevalent disease of an aging global population. Dry AMD, representing a substantial global market opportunity and afflicts between 10-15 million Americans, and a further 10 million Europeans.

As the senior editor, John Gever, of MedPage Today reported, following the publication of three studies about induced pluripotent stem cells in the March 3rd, issue of Nature, “The road to regenerative medicine based on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) may have developed a giant pothole, with new studies showing that the cells are prone to several types of genetic defects.”

Stem Cells in Ophthalmology Update 18: StemCells Inc. Demonstrates That its Human Neural Stem Cells Preserve Vision – Gets FDA Authorization to Initiate Clinical Trial for Dry AMD

On January 30, 2012, StemCells Inc. announced the publication of preclinical data demonstrating that its proprietary HuCNS-SCr cells (purified human neural stem cells) protect host photoreceptors and preserve vision in an animal model of retinal disease. The preclinical results are highly relevant to human disorders of vision loss, the most notable of which is dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The study is available online at and will be featured as the cover article in the February issue of the international peer-reviewed European Journal of Neuroscience.

Stem Cells in Ophthalmology Update 19: ACT Adds Bascom Palmer as Another Clinical Site for Dry AMD Trials

Advanced Cell Technology said that Bascom Palmer Eye Institute had received IRB approval to become the third U.S. clinical site for testing ACT’s human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial cells in the treatment of dry age-related macular degeneration. Harvard’s Mass Eye & Ear joins UCLA’s/Jules Stein, Wills Eye Institute, and Bascom Palmer in the ongoing Phase I/II clinical trial using subretinal injections of embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial cells.

In addition, it is my understanding that Moorfields Eye Hospital in London is awaiting final approval of an IND application to also participate in ACT’s clinical trial for dry AMD, along with its current participation as part of the company’s Stargardt’s disease stem cell clinical trial.

Because I have been updating this information almost on a daily basis, I’ve decided to no longer post the information on this Journal (Irv Arons’ Journal), as it is practically out-of-date almost as soon as I post it. It is said to have numerous benefits by those who are familiar with it. The benefits range from physical, mental to emotional. It is indicated for conditions such as depression and anxiety. For many years, it has been closely associated with some religions including Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism.

Ayurvedic medicine is the other therapy that also originated in India. The treatment has close similarity to yoga. The objective of this treatment is to establish a connection between the spirit, the mind and the body. When all these components are balanced, a life force in the body is stimulated. The amount of life force that is stimulated is proportional to the intensity of therapy.

Homeopathy is another treatment that has also been in existence for a long time. Evidence suggests that treatment was first used in Europe. It is based on what is known as the law of similar which implies that causes and cures of diseases are closely related; by identifying the cause, the cure can also be worked out.

The list of options is endless. There are many other forms that are practised including hypnotherapy, naturopathy, aromatherapy, massage, hydrotherapy, nutrition therapy, massage and biofeedback among others. The side effect profile is tolerable for most of them. Commonly encountered side effects include pain, swelling and infections.

When seeking alternative healing modalities, it is important to do so in a properly licenced facility. Today, the therapies are legally recognised and are regulated by many governments. Always ensure that your therapist is licenced to offer the treatment. It should be emphasized that most of the treatments still lack scientific backing and due caution should be taken.
