The question of when to transition to a gentler way of practice is one of those million dollar questions, right? When (and how) should we start changing our yoga practice? In fact, we recently received this very question from a reader:

“Thank you for this wonderful blog. I am 60 years old and new to yoga. I come from 10 years of doing weight lifting. I also would like to know when to transition to a gentler way of practice? It seems that after a strenuous yoga class it takes a couple of days for my muscles to stop from being sore. But I don't want to lose my strength. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!”

Yesterday’s post (see Range of Motion: Yoga's Got It Covered) is a timely one, as it speaks to the benefits of maintaining a certain amount of yoga asana practice over time to help maintain good range of motion at the joints so we can do things we want and need to do in life. But there is relatively little guidance from the various yoga schools that have made their way to the US or have actually evolved into new systems of practice in the US on how the intensity of a yoga practice should modify and change as students age.

However, as I mentioned previously, in the yoga tradition of Krishnamacharya, they teach that there are different stages of life, from student to householder to senior to hermit, more or less. At each stage of life there are different responsibilities and goals to address, and yoga practice would be modified at each stage to help accomplish those goals. Also, in that tradition, not only does the level of strenuous practice typically go from lots when you are a child, gradually diminishing as you age, but students often work with an individual teacher who can act as a more objective guide to assist them in figuring out just such questions that arise, especially as practitioners get into their 60s and 70s.

I am not aware of any other specific guidelines from other yoga traditions or styles that specifically address what our reader has noticed following a strenuous yoga asana class. I think it is reasonable to expect a bit of soreness the day after a class that is somewhat challenging to your body on both a strengthening and stretching level. But if your symptoms of soreness last more than 24 hours, I’d be looking for a class that is a bit less challenging and more tolerable for you body.

A typical average yoga class in the gym or studio is 1 hour to 1.5 hours long. So you’d be meeting these criteria if you went to 2 classes a week. As an alternative, you could do a home practice two or more days a week for 20-30 minutes, and if you designed a sequence of poses that works all the major muscle groups of the body, which CDC defines as legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms, you might also meet their recommendations. I’d use the soreness levels as a way of deciding how strenuous your work should be, and I think it is a good idea, if you do get sore for 24 hours after you practice, to space your sessions out to at least every other day—just a common sense recommendation.

I had several responses to my review of J.J. Keeler's I Hardly Ever Wash My Hands: The Other Side of OCD, expressing fears that reading the book would give them ideas or cause anxiety.  I've been mulling this over, because it's a challenge to respond.

The simplest answer is that I don't know if J.J. Keeler's account of her OCD, and the specific things she worries about, will "stick" in your mind or create new OCD obsessions.


This is the nature of OCD that one person's trigger can seem completely harmless to someone else with a different form OCD; it's not only those without OCD who think that a particular obsession is incomprehensible.  There is a tendency to assume that other people's obsessions are easier to bear.  Conversely, if we suspect that a person's obsessions might be similar to ours, then there can be a desire to quarantine them, and not get anywhere near, as if the fears were contagious.  Or we are afraid of adding a whole new category of obsessing, and again, stay away.

This is OCD's mode of operation, to convince you that you can avoid the contagion of life, if you just screen out all things that might set you off, and enlist those around you to help in this task.   I know this from the inside.  Public health campaigns to raise awareness about various illnesses seemed designed by very cruel folks to torment me.  I was already highly aware of things that could go wrong, and I didn't want to know of any additional ways to monitor and worry about.  When I was a kid there was no internet but there were posters on the bus, public service ads on tv, special episodes of programs where someone had a disease, and magazine articles.  Women's magazines were the worst, and my mood would plummet if I was in a waiting room, reading one(which I picked up because I was anxious to be in the waiting room to begin with).

In college I was doing fairly well for awhile, avoiding obsessing about moles, until a classmate opened up his datebook, and I could see he'd written in an appointment for a mole removal.  I couldn't have predicted this.  Now, it might seem that you could at least keep yourself safe by avoiding what seems obvious, like Keeler's book or other OCD self-help books, or my blog, or the OCD Yahoo Group, or OCD support groups, but what is your definition of safe?  Avoiding all possibilities of help is not safety.  OCD would have you believe that it is possible to maintain complete quarantine, but triggers are part of life.

The irony is that when I was in an anxiety spike, I would then search out articles about whatever symptom was catching my attention, in order to reassure myself that I didn't have something serious.  There would be an initial calming effect if my symptoms didn't match, but then as I'd keep reading, I'd find something that again put doubt into my mind, or introduced an even more scary possibility.

I am not minimizing the abject fear of being seized by an OCD obsession.  I've been there.
But getting help for OCD is where the true hope of living beyond your obsessions resides.  OCD wants to maintain the status quo.  Don't get help.  Don't learn about how other people have coped.  Don't risk new pain.  

If you can't read a self-help book or OCD memoir because it's too terrifying, then this is a signal to find an exposure therapist, or a self-help group, where other people can help you.  I understand the irony in this.  I was once incredibly shy and my therapist suggested group therapy, and I was appalled.  How could I go to a group for help if I was terrified of groups??  But eventually, I realized that I didn't want to go on the way I was going:  the cost of my fear was too much, I was missing my life.

Keeler, in the preface to her book, writes of having severe fears of harming someone while at Disneyland, and self-loathing for what kind of person she must be, when a toddler ran over and hugged her leg.

It felt like she was telling me I wasn't what I feared.
I have no idea who this toddler was and I never saw her again.
But she saved part of me that day.  
Hopefully, this book can save part of someone else.

This is commonly referred to as osteoarthritis (see Yoga for Osteoarthritis), an extremely common aging-related problem that can actually start at about any age, especially in those who use their bodies intensely for sports and work activities. 

Finally, the bones can begin to thin and lose density as we age, making them more vulnerable to fractures, which can then be slower to heal due to the abnormally thin bones. Thinning of the bones (osteoporosis) is extremely common in women over 65, with up to 50% developing it, and surprisingly common in men as well over 65, at 25% incidence. The bones of the thoracic spine (your mid spine) are at greatest risk for fracture, followed by the wrist bones and the femur bone (thigh bone) of the hip joint. Fractures from osteoporosis can lead to ongoing chronic pain, physical disability and, particularly with hip fractures, premature death. 

These factors and others, such the connection between the muscles and the neurologic system, can also lead to changes in posture and balance, which can also increase the chances of injury over time. An increase in general stiffness and pain can also arise with combinations of the above changes. 

On a brighter note, it has been noted in aging athletes, specifically long distance runners and cyclists, who maintain good cardio-vascular and respiratory function may see improved endurance in their sports compared to when they were younger! Here is a case where long term participation in physical activity pays off in improved function, not decline. This speaks directly to what we can do with regards to our lifestyle choices that can positively influence these changes of aging: stay active!  Regular exercise, modified to accommodate body changes such as arthritic joints or thinning bones, can help to slow, stall and even reverse many of these conditions. And for our purposes here, yoga can be an ideal standalone practice for some conditions, such as sarcopenia, and great in combination with other health practices for others, such as with osteoporosis or arthritis (which might also require medications and mineral supplements, for example). Eating a healthy diet and drinking adequate amounts of water to fuel and hydrate the body, and by extension these parts of the musculo-skeletal system, is another wise choice.

This past August I was back in Ocean Springs, Mississippi at River Rock Yoga, leading a weekend workshop. One of the students, who has been a regular in class with me there over the years, brought in a few pointed questions for me that he hoped I could address on YFHA. He has been a regular reader since we started, and practices yoga on his own as well as attending classes regularly. In his search for the perfect home practice, he was very curious if I thought that there was a recommended minimum time for a home practice, realizing that some yoga is better than none!

In his own attempt to answer the question, he cited an April, 2013 article in an issue of Prevention Magazine which claimed, referring to a study done in postmenopausal women, that 42 minutes of vigorous exercise over 3 days (that means 14 minutes a day) maintains telomeres. As regular readers of this blog will know, telomeres are little “caps” or tails on the end of DNA stands that may have a relationship to longevity of certain cells in the body. Recent yoga studies have shown a positive relationship between yoga and telomere length. However, I don’t think the yoga practices in these yoga studies were only 14 minutes long, and likely would not fall into the category of “vigorous exercise.” However, this is an intriguing idea, and I’d say if you could hit the 14-minute mark in your home practice, that is a good start—more on that in a minute.

My student also cited “100 New Scientific Discoveries” issue of Time magazine, where he came across this:

And real life examples of the power of a regular practice are equally compelling to me as scientific studies. Recently, a long-time student of mine who has chronic back pain experienced a distinct change in his daily health. In the past, he had come to my back care yoga class regularly, but eventually found that some of the poses we did would actually flare his chronic back pain. So we met privately and developed a home practice he could do for 15-25 minutes daily, if he so chose. He found that he would do the practice 2-3 times a week, and it helped his overall back pain nicely. 

But then two months ago, he asked if we could audio record a practice that lasted about 40 minutes. He explained that his partner had become interested in doing some yoga at home and wanted something they could do together in the morning before work. We came up with a balanced routine that included poses beneficial for back health, but also breathing practices and a good Savasana at the end. When he returned for a follow-up recently, it was not the lower back symptoms he reported on, but that the chronic loose bowel movements he has suffered with every morning for years had diminished and stopped, replaced by a normal movement each am. He was thrilled and felt it was a direct effect of his new daily morning practice. And for him, 40 minutes a day works just fine.

We know from the work of cardiologist Herbert Benson, that 10 minutes of meditation is the time frame for the body to shift to the Relaxation Response (the Rest and Digest side of the autonomic nervous system), and by 20 minutes the effects are even more profound. And, of course, there are many other variables to consider when you design your home practice, as you can see from the 24 posts we have done to date that address the topic of home practice. We know, for example, that one study showed that it was regular home practice, more than attending classes over time or regularly, that seems to relate to long term health benefits of yoga (see Does Home Yoga Practice Make You Healthier? and Home Practice: The Best Way to Improve Your Health and Well-Being).

But like most issues we have discussed here over the years, the answer to this question of the optimal minimum time for home practice is really “It depends!” But, given what my astute student has uncovered, as well as research findings on the benefits of regular practice, my observations of my students and my own practice, I’d feel comfortable recommending that you try to hit that 20 minute mark, and on days when you feel like going longer, there is nothing to stop you!

Thanks for an overwhelming response to earlier blog about Pranayama! Well, from your responses, I can come to conclusion that every one of us is interested about health and that is certainly a good thing to know! One of the great queries that prompted me to write today’s blog is “If we follow Pranayama and exercises regularly, will we be never sick?

The credit for this blog certainly goes for these people who keep me on my toes to clarifying things and delve deep into the things those I write about. Upon further study of the things and after reaching out to some old health encyclopedias, I found something astonishing. The query answered affirmatively for those who really are regular in following their exercise and Pranayama routine and some other lifestyle changes. The concerned guide-books say, “You will not fall sick if you do these things scrupulously.” But what does scrupulous mean? Let’s see-

Certain criteria are there to define what is scrupulous about exercise means:

(1) Doing it everyday

Well, the medical sciences tell you that exercising regularly means exercising at least 3 times a week. Some of the medical books mention that even exercising 5 to 6 times a month gives you good results. Are these books talking wrong? No! They are not wrong for people who are extremely sedentary and need some push up. For them, this is the right guideline to start with. Also it indicates “Do at least this much!” But our aim is different. We do not want to fall sick. If that aim is to be targeted, we must do it everyday.

(2) Not skipping exercise

You might be thinking why the same point again? Doing it everyday means don’t skip. Then why this point? This is because the term “everyday” differs for people. I daily encounter in my clinical practice when I suggest to go for a walk daily, people come the next week and tell, “Doctor, I went for a walk everyday except for a few days gap!” “Why gap?” “Doctor, went to my mother’s place for 2 days” “Doctor, my niece came visiting” “I was about to leave when my husband told me to type his papers” “This house-work!” “You know my children’s school timing just doesn’t match with my walking time!” Pheww! This is what happens with almost every one of us. We do this as if our body will forgive us and still maintain its harmony. But norms of body and nature are very stringent. They don’t give us leeway for such reasons.

According to me, the above mentioned two criteria are the only ones that define scrupulousness. No “some changes here and there”!

One of our great teachers at the hospital where I studied used to tell patients “Do it any time of the day. Don’t tell excuses like I cannot get up in morning or I don’t get time. Even if you do at the mid of the day in heat of sun, it’s fine but don’t skip! If you need to go somewhere, get up earlier to complete your exercise routine!”

Below is listed the recipe for perfect health. Following it or not is in your hands!

(1) Drink at least 10 glasses of water per day.

(2) Eat at least two servings of (any) fruit every day.

(3) Space out your meals. Never eat full-stomach 2 times a day. Instead have 4 to 6 smaller meals across the day.

(4) Begin your meals with raw salad. It enables you to have fuller tummy before you embark on main dish. Naturally you tend to eat less. Also you get enough fiber to help you avoid constipation and gain lots of antioxidants.

(5) While having your favorite sweet dish and while on weight loss regime, don’t deprive yourself. Try having smaller portions and reduce the portions day by day. This way, you don’t feel overwhelmed to leave the food you love and also tend to accumulate fewer calories.

(6) If you tend to over-eat a day, try compensating it by lengthening your exercise time that day or next day. Yes, it’s must!

(7) Reduce eating outside. If you go out 3 to 4 times a week, reduce it to 2 times for first week; slowly reduce it to 2 to 3 times a month. Impossible? Don’t you want to be disease-free?

(8) Try to be active throughout the day, even if at home. Remember you must sweat a least once in a day due to some or the other work. Gardening, washing clothes, cleaning a room, etc come under these types of work. ‘I drop my daughter to school!’ C’mon! It’s not a work that sweats!

(9) Smoking and alcohol are strictly prohibited with no excuse at all!

(10) Laugh ‘heartily’ at least 2 times a day. Yep, must! Remember ‘smile’ is not ‘laugh’!

(11) Let your body and mind forget the word “stress”. Prioritize your work. Don’t be bogged down by people calling you “time-table”. Only those who manage their times well live longer, as they don’t allow them to get stressed by impending deadlines. Remember “deadlines are the death’s trap”. Let’s work ahead of time before we arrive even close to deadline. This means you should slot some time even for ‘emergencies’. If they don’t arrive, it’s your time for self-indulgence! Cool!

(12) Now the point comes- Exercise regularly. Do you know what the most beneficial factor in exercising is, apart from getting healthier? It is “giving time for yourself”. Let it become part and parcel of your routine, so much so that if you skip, you feel ‘incomplete’ for that day!

(13) Practice Pranayama at the start of any type of exercise. It allows you to concentrate better on your exercise. It helps drive away negative forces in you and surroundings. It enables you to forget the pride, jealousy, hatred, and selfishness before you embark on a journey to give your body a good head-start!

(14) Do not take any tablet (even antacid, pain-killer, or anti-diarrheal) without consulting your family physician. Remember these drugs may be life-savers at times, but it has been seen that the same drugs become killers when taken haphazardly. It is a known truth that Ayurvedic and homeopathic medicines are far mild and without side effects when it comes to treating maladies. Go natural in whatever way you can. Never ever burden your body with nasty chemicals and artificial medicinal agents.

(15) Last but not the least- Follow this daily!!

Sounds overwhelming? Actually it’s not. If you think calmly, this is the life we would all desire and be happy with. Just the huge bombarding of marketing gimmicks from various junk food products, ‘money brings happiness’ attitude, and procrastination are the factors those are leading us nowhere these days. And most importantly, we want to be disease-free! No sickness for life! And practicing above things daily gives us 100% guaranteed results!
